Rob Ryan – Paper Cuts illustration

by Marssaié

After completing a dissertation on ‘paper’ and the rise of paper art I became completely intrigued by this simple yet complexed art form and figured id share some extracts and featured artists from my dissertation.

Rob Ryan is a British artist, whom specialises in illustrations that invite a combination of quirky poetic words and innocent enchanted imagery. Unlike conventional illustrators, Ryan’s illustrations are not achieved by illustrating onto the paper, but rather into it. With the aim to convey stories through the method of paper art  ‘I tend to do pictures about the sort of things I think about and I think about people’[1] Within his exploration of people, the use of language and text within his paper cut works become more detrimental in communicating his overall aim of encapsulating thoughts and feelings of humanity. His main focal points are within the idea of melancholy, romance and childlike enchantment.
